That it feels thin is something I could get used to, though as I said I would have preferred thicker and longer battery life.

The media seems to think that it is all about thin: See all the Samsung 10.1 reviews. They just marvel at the thinness. its like tablets are supermodels or something.

I would have gone iPad2 *if* they had gone retina (300 DPI) on the screen. Keeping the same screen resolution / DPI was the killer non-feature that opened up my willingness to look elsewhere.

In fact, I predict that DPI will become the "next killer feature", because we are about done with how thin these can get and keep 10 hours of run time. My Xoom moves to its next owner when I can get a 10 inch Android powered 300 DPI quad core tablet. Should be in a year or less.Steve Carlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05449096706380607113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6176046313989043285.post-90216928145986951632011-06-21T12:04:50.861-05:002011-06-21T12:04:50.861-05:00Re: The HTC Flyer: I have been very impressed with...Re: The HTC Flyer: I have been very impressed with the build quality of HTC gear. Battery life is usually another story.

I never looked seriously at the Flyer because it has a 7 inch screen, and that is a split between my 4 inch Captivate an my 10.1 inch Xoom that I will probably fill someday with a Nook Color. Mostly for price reasons.

If HTC had something out in the 10.1 inch form factor before the Xoom, I would have had to think very long and hard about it. I think it would come down to whichever one was the friendliest to the community. I like for example that the Xoom bootloader is not locked. But I read HTC is starting to do that for their phones, so they "get it".

Replacing what the vendor provides in Android space is critical sometimes. I put the Froyo/2.2 factory Samsung ROM onto the Captivate out of curiosity, and it is not eating the battery like crazy. Time to go back to Cyanogenmod!Steve Carlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05449096706380607113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6176046313989043285.post-31850970775218368092011-06-21T11:45:33.994-05:002011-06-21T11:45:33.994-05:00Ignore the "pundits". They were wrong then and they're wrong now.

That said, I love love love my iPad2. I got the wifi version and turned on hotspotting on my cell. If the iPad had support for flash, it would be perfect but I can live without it for the most part. I gave my father my Kindle since I can read everything on my iPad.

I still think Android-based phones and tablets will dominate the market soon, however. But for now, I will keep my iDevices.PaulKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05881759611738886622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6176046313989043285.post-10249424882324891032011-06-21T10:14:38.171-05:002011-06-21T10:14:38.171-05:00Good day! I kno...You point about perception is very accurate. I know that many assume I am a Linux and nothing but Linux type of person, because I write about Linux over at "Communities.bmc.com" and about Open Source in general from time to time here. There is some projection of other peoples thoughts and beliefs onto me that can not be avoided. Their point of view actually tells me a great deal about what they think rather than really being about what I am or think.

As for stopping writing.. That is a personal choice. Some write because they have to. It is literally a writers desease. Others write to practice, or to try and make one point or another, but then stop... all sorts of other types of writers in between.

I enjoy writing, and I enjoy having intelligent, well informed conversations with the people that read either of my blogs, and I am fortunate in that the people that read my material are by and large responsible and thoughtful correspondents rather than the naysayers I see so often on the Internet. For me it is not about hit rates or whatever, though I would be lying if I did not say that knowing my blogs are read around the world and by people I respect is very rewarding.Steve Carlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05449096706380607113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6176046313989043285.post-86412973614831857522010-06-05T05:48:50.650-05:002010-06-05T05:48:50.650-05:00I was thinking about this yesterday, while trying ...I was thinking about this yesterday, while trying to figure out why a comment I made was interpreted as a personal insult. I don't have a clue.

I did decide some time ago to write less, since I'm tired of subjects becoming embodied by the ones involved in the discussion. My comments tend to be of quite some length, which probably has more to do with my nature and fast typing skills (is Das Keyboard good or is it good?), and less to do with passion. Maybe I erase myself from the cyberspace? I'm not sure. Trouble is I enjoy languages, and even if English isn't my preferred secondary language, I can't avoid playing with it rhetorically, which probably could be interpreted as argumentative, even how unintentional it is.

I rumble a bit now, but my thought is that even if you yourself view yourself as pragmatic and not especially passionate about your decision of operating system, it's still difficult to maintain that perception among your readers.KimTjikhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06159367184391537599noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6176046313989043285.post-17587289950429865362010-06-04T10:01:50.222-05:002010-06-04T10:01:50.222-05:00Actually, Steve Jobs made that same point this las...Actually, Steve Jobs made that same point this last week, and I agree with it more or less: Foxconn has a lower suicide rate than what is average for China.

That it is in the news does not make it 100% factual...
